Growing up
I think I always knew
I’d be living somewhere else
far away from home
Like many before me
and many since
You move to Toronto or Boston
or Calgary or somewhere
to make a living
to make a life.
A thousand miles away I am
I love my wife
I love my daughters
and it’s a good life I live
here in central Maryland
Good friends,
worthwhile investments of time and life
Nice winters here
Beautiful springs and autumns.
But in the summer
I think of Shelburne
I remember Nova Scotia
The rugged coastline and salt air
and New Brunswick
Old friends, old ways
Nostalgia
but something more
Something like love.
Thirty-three years
I’ve been away
but every summer I return
to the Maritimes,
to Canada .
And heading north on summer highways
the song begins
and memories pour forth.
My wife and I share the driving
Share the drive
Audio books and conversations
Twenty hours and we’re there.
Mom and Dad in Havelock
Country roads to review
Old landscapes to retrace
Old shores to visit, barefoot
Old paths to walk
Old friends to see
Old days to remember
I’m from here!
It’s good to be back
in the land that gave me birth
My heartland.
When are you heading north? I'm leaving tomorrow am for the rest of the summer. Can't wait.

I can relate.
ReplyDeleteI can relate to the sentiments, and looking at the picture I wish I knew the place too - where is it?
ReplyDeleteHi Connie, we're headed up on Thursday, July 22, and will be heading back on Tuesday, August 3rd. Maybe we'll see you up there -- my folks' number is 506-5344-2444
ReplyDeleteHi RC (I think you're Ralph) -- I'm sure you can relate!
ReplyDeleteHi Philip, I'm quite sure the photo is of Peggy's Cove, near Halifax, Nova Scotia. But it could be one of a thousand coastal villages in the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island or Newfoundland. There are villages like this on the Maine coast as well, but without the Anglican Church :) Have you ever been to Canada?
ReplyDeleteFantastic place - it looks very Icelandic to me (but I haven't been to Iceland either!)
ReplyDeleteYes, I've only been to Canada once, but the West Coast, BC, Vancouver, Rockies, Banff etc.
Have lots of relatives and old school chums that live in Alberta, Sask., and Ontario. - OH! I tell a lie, we were in Ohio once visiting my Aunt, and took a trip up to Niagara and met up with an old school chum living in Ontario (If Niagara Falls counts as a visit to Canada?)
But Nova Scotia looks so different again, brilliant!
Yes, if you went across the border at Niagara Falls, you were in Canada. The Canadian side is the more touristy, the more commercialized -- there's a casino there now.
ReplyDeleteBut the Maritime Provinces are a world apart. The coast reminds me a lot of the west coast of Ireland, and the inland parts are softwood forest or farmland.
These are the "have-not" provinces, with farming, fishing (now much depleted) and tourism. They remind me much of rural Ireland and Scotland.
